Illegal hutments in Dahisar damaging environment
The 8000 hutments in Ganpat Patil Nagar on Link Road, Dahisar are posing as environment threat for the city. These illegal properties are not only sore to eye but are also encroachments which have gone too far on vast tracts of mangroves.
The illegal slums in the coastal stretch of Dahisar are increasing at an alarming rate despite the best efforts of locals, activists and even corporators to remove it.
The slums have increased in recent years as there were only 198 shanties in 1995. Since then, the illegal hutments have been growing till BMC razed them down in 2003. The main residents of these illegal constructions are migrants from Nepal and Bangladesh.
The main reason for the existence of the slum is that it is politically supported. The slum is little away from Gorai creek which is known for anti national activities. Also, power and water theft is on the rise and remains unchecked.
A PIL had been filed in 2010 against these illegal constructions. Recently, BMC commissioner has assured that the civic body will start demolishing the shanties from second week of January onwards.
