Immersion of Idols made Bangalore Lakes Polluted
More than 25,000 idols were immersed in Sankey Tank’s kalyani (immersion pond) on Day 1 of the festivities while Yediyur lake in South Bangalore saw 40,000 idols immersed. BBMP tried hard to reduce the pollution of these water bodies but it was clearly a losing battle.
Over 40,000 idols were immersed in the water body on Thursday night. Along with idols, there are paper ornaments or cotton necklaces which people believe the idol must have when it’s immersed. Though we ask them to remove it, many don’t do it and they don’t dissolve in water. That’s why the problem occurs. Water in the kalyani will be changed every two days,” a senior BBMP official at Yediyur Lake.
Though workers tried to remove garbage from the lake, small heaps of muck started piling up again by Friday evening. The pollution was distinctly visible.
