Karnataka HC issued a Notice to BDA for Road Widening Project in Sankey Road
Locals and various RWAs had staged a huge demonstration against the road-widening project in Sankey Road. Later, Malleswaram Residents’ Welfare Association member Dr Meenakshi Bharat and five others moved the high court against the project. The petitioners contended that the widening of the road would only increase the rate of accidents and pedestrians and students would find it extremely difficult to cross the widened stretch. Hence, signal-free roads could not be the solution to traffic congestion.
The Karnataka high court on Friday issued a notice to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) in a writ petition filed by the Malleswaram Residents’ Welfare Association challenging the decision of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to axe trees for widening Sankey Road.
The case came up for hearing before a division bench headed Justice N Kumar on Friday. An impleading application was submitted by the petitioners to the court, following which the court issued a notice to the BDA. At its last hearing on Wednesday, the high court said that the BDA should be made a party to the case as the petitioners had claimed that the BDA had not envisaged the road widening project in its master plan 2015.
