Karnataka HC’s instructions influence PMC

No Comments Sub Category:Civic Issues,Maintenance,Pune Posted On: Dec 03, 2012

Pune- The orders issued by Karnataka high court regarding waste segregation and management has inspired the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to get rid of garbage mismanagement in Pune.

The court, stressing on waste segregation at source in Bangalore, ordered that residents have to segregate dry and wet waste at household level and then the segregated waste has to be separately collected and transported to composting and recycling units.

The court has given two months deadline to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to set up waste segregation and wet waste processing units in all 28 constituencies within two months after which it has to set up such units in all 198 wards.

According to sources from the civic body, several elected representatives opposed the process of waste segregation at source level. The PMC has planned to give the door-to-door garbage collection contract to a city-based NGO SWaCH though the elected representatives have few objections. In order to convince them and approve the proposal, the civic administration has planned to highlight directives of the HC.

The corporation accepted that it failed to achieve 100% segregation of dry and wet garbage at source. Only 30-35% of the total garbage collected in the city has been segregated at source.
