KMC keeping watch on illegal parking lots

No Comments Sub Category:Cities,Civic Issues,Kolkata Posted On: Jan 17, 2013

car parkingKolkata- Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is now keeping a strict eye on illegal parking lots.

In this regard, a meeting was held between MMiC (parking), mayor and Police traffic assistant commissioner on January 16, 2013. The list of various unauthorized parking lots across the city will be drawn. Police have been asked to keep a check on bogus parking lots in Kolkata city.

A prominent example of illegal parking lots is Chittaranjan Avenue. Here, many cars are parked illegally from Bagbazar to Esplanade. Moreover, the agencies which are supposed to collect parking fees on this stretch possess no licence for running these lots. Other major examples are College Street and Jawaharlal Nehru Road in the north and Gariahat Road and Ballygunge Circular Road in the south.

During the meeting, the mayor agreed to ban car parking on  Sarat Bose Road, SP Mukherjee Road and Asutosh Mukherjee Road to reduce traffic. The SP road extends from Exide crossing to Rashbehari Avenue while Sarat Bose road extends from Minto Park to Southern Avenue.

Motorists are in worse situation as they can only differentiate the real parking lots by looking for a KMC signboard which shows the prices or asking the attendant to show the licence issued by KMC. Moreover, the registered agencies are playing games with the corporation. They initially gave their licence to KMC on a plea of suffering heavy losses and on other side they are collecting money from motorists and are refusing to pay the corporation’s share.

As per the statement of KMC official parking department, there are officially around 312 parking zones which can take parking of  7,510 cars a day. But this number does not fit to the private cars ( 12.13 lakh) in the city which serves as an advantage for fake parking agencies. The officials defended themselves by stating lack of mechanism to keep check on actual number of cars getting accommodated in the illegal car parking lots.

KMC has decided to open new car parking areas in coming few months.
