Police assures to solve problems of T. Nagar
Chennai- Residents of Panagal Park and T. Nagar were fed up of illegal parking and huckster encroachment. Thus a group of residents took ‘protective shelter’ at R1 Mambalam police station on January 13, 2013.
Finally cops assured them to look into this matter seriously with suitable changes to traffic regulations and pointed out Chennai Corporation’ responsibility to handle encroachments. To discuss and solve all civic issues, police is planning to organize meeting with residents twice a month.
This protest was already planned by residents of over 700 homes in the shopping hub. It includes people residing in Motilal Street, Mahalakshmi Street, Mangai Street, Dandapani Street, Ramanathan Street, Madley Road, Muthurangan Salai, Venkatesan Street, Burkit Road, Sarojini Street, Natesan Street, Ramanathan Street, Rameswaram Road and Pinjala Subramanian Street.
About a week ago, a telegraphic notice was sent to the police commissioner by the residents. The number of shops on Railway Border Road are over 700, in which according to the High Court order there should be only 131 shops. According to the residents, the number of hawkers on Usman Road have crossed 500.
Traders are also dumping goods and waste on 20 interior roads. The petition also said that hawkers and traders have occupied every inch of the commercially significant area with the help of officials.
Such problems are choking entire neighborhood along with creating hindrance in their normal lives. Although parking arrangements were made few months back but it was opposed by many shopkeepers. Traders want such measures should be taken which improves shopping experience without affecting residential areas.
Chennai Corporation requested Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited to develop T. Nagar area in the year 2009. Thus to assure smooth traffic flow and integrated commercial activities, the civic body has proposed many important projects in Chennai such as as pedestrianisation of Thyagaraya Road, South Usman Road and areas around Panagal Park; dedicated hawker zones in the pedestrian areas; an elevated skywalk connecting Mambalam railway station and T. Nagar bus terminus; redesigning of Panagal Park; integrated traffic signals and multi-level car parking.
