No place to dump garbage in Kolkata

1 Comment Sub Category:Cities,Civic Issues,Kolkata Posted On: Jan 14, 2013

KMCKolkata- Since there is no progress going in land acquisition matter, it is assumed that tons of garbage will be collected in Kolkata.

It is because, the proposal of land acquisition by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is not approved by the West Bengal government. Chief minister is following  hands-off policy on land acquisition i .e  Trinamool government’s land policy. Now the authorities cannot proceed with the setting up of a new dumping ground for the city’s solid waste.

The only dumping ground in Kolkata is “Dhapa” which is spread across 23.3 hectares.  KMC requires an alternative on urgent basis. The present site can take no more waste as it is already handling  4,000-4,500 tons of waste generated by the residents of the Kolkata city.

An alternative land was found after months of scouting which is still not approved by the government.  This plot is situated  at Kharamba, which is about 20km from Dhapa and adjacent to the Calcutta Leather Complex at Bantala in South 24-Parganas. The plot measures about 500 hectares and the officials were planning to buy 100 hectares as soon as possible.

According to the experts, the alternative land dump site should be of 300 to 350 hectares. But the matter was of critical importance such that the officials of municipal corporation compromised by putting in a request for only 100 hectares. It is believed that this much land will be sufficient to keep the city clean for next 20 years.

This request of land acquisition was forwarded by the Municipal commissioner to Chief secretary three months ago. The  triumphant political strategy is also giving other major troubles like availability of funds. The plot at Kharamba which falls outside the boundary of the East Kolkata Wetlands, sees no sort of future development.  But the municipal corporation is ready to pay Rs. 75 crore for that 100 hectare land.

The officials are giving priority to safety because if anything extra is added to the existing dump site, it will cause a collapse. Officials doubt the acceptance of this land acquisition proposal and thus have started locating other sites to dump solid waste.
