Kolkata metro fares won’t rise

1 Comment Sub Category:Cities,Civic Issues,Kolkata Posted On: Jan 10, 2013

kolkata metroKolkata- Kolkata metro is suffering heavy operational losses from past many years. Thus the officials demanded for fare hike. On January 9, 2013 Union Railway Minister announced an increase in railway fares across the country, however, Kolkata metro fares remained untouched.

Metro is the the cheapest form of public transport. The Kolkata metro fare has not been revised since last ten years (2002). Officials were expecting a fare hike to suffer no loss. Although the officials got upset after this announcement, but some still have hope for fare hike.

Kolkata metro was running under the domination of Trinamool Congress in the Rail ministry. In the year 2011-2012 Kolkata metro spent nearly Rs 300 to earn every Rs 100. The revenue gap increased more when metro lines were extended from Tollygunge to Garia in southern part of the city.

Now since the Trinamool has quit the UPA Govt at the Centre, there were chances of moderate increase of fares. The minimum fare expected to be increased was Rs 5 from Rs 4. If there was any hike it would have been according to the zone.

In this regard a committee was also formed at the ministry level which was supposed to take the final decision. According to the sources the meeting was held and the members suggested that fares should be hiked by at least Re 1 for every zone but they did not specify the quantum of hike in metro fares.
