Lalbagh sticks to old incadescebt bulb

For the Republic Day- Lalbagh Flower Show 2011 highlight of the show were the model of a Metro coach which is 33-feet long and 5.5-feet high as well as an impression of the Kempegowda Watch Tower. But there seem to be no takers for the state government’s ambitious ‘belaku’(light) campaign to promote the use of CFL lighting, even among its own departments. The horticulture department, which still sticks to power-guzzling incandescent bulbs.



For the annual flower show,incandescent bulbs have been strung from the main entrance of Lalbagh till the Glass House. Several arches have been erected along the way, with each arch holding 50 incandescent bulbs of 40/60 watts each.Energy experts and environmentalists have raised concerns over the continuing use of incandescent bulbs.

Earlier, the Mysore palace had come under intense criticism for using incandescent bulbs, which add to carbon emissions. Subsequently, the palace board had offered to switch over to CFL or Eco-friendly LED lights for Mysore Palace.



Horticulture director N Jayaram said, “It is true that CFL/ LED lighting is eco-friendly and should be implemented in a place like Lalbagh which promotes ecological conservation. But for the time being, we are using the old lighting system. But we have begun using CFL/LED in other city parks.”
