Land acquisition in progress for road widening projects in Kochi
Kochi- Land acquisition for Thammanam-Pullepady road widening project seems to start shortly with the Kochi Corporation planning to issue the preliminary notification.
Revenue department has been issued directions to speed up procedures for issuing a preliminary or 4 (1) notification.
The project requires around 20 acres of land for road widening as well as rehabilitation (10 acres each), as estimated corporation officials.
A corporation official said that the land acquisition may require a fund of minimum Rs 170 crore. And this estimate would even increase to Rs 200 crore since the landowners consider the land value as approved by the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), he added.
While the Kerala government has provided Rs 25 crore for the project, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has alleged that they have not received any instruction from the government regarding the implementation of the Transfer of Development Right (TDR) for developing the Thammanam-Pullepady Road.
As per sources, the GCDA was given the job of implementing TDR and an in-principle approval was also given to execute the road development project under TDR. Despite all these, it claimed that the government had not provided any further clarification on procedures to be followed for executing TDR.
If everything goes smooth then the Corporation is hoping to start the project soon.
In the meantime, a high level committee has granted sanction for the land acquisition for the widening of Vyttila-Petta road and for shifting railway quarters from Ernakulam south Railway station for the Metro station in South.
In the Vyttila-Petta road widening project, it has been planned to widen the road to 26 metres. As estimated, the project would need a total of 9.35 hectares of land for this purpose.
The authorities gave a quick decision in this case because the improvement of this road is essential for the construction of Kochi Metro. The widening of the road will be done according to the alignment of the Metro Rail project.
In South, the railway quarters land is being acquired to build the metro station. KMRL management has discussed the issue with the railway authorities and sought the permission some time back and Railway authorities have also agreed to the proposal. The State Government has sanctioned 3.14 acres in South Railway Station area to rebuild the quarters.
