Land deals rise as land acquisition bill awaits final nod
New Delhi: As the Land Acquisition bill is waiting for the finalisation, there has been a sudden upswing in the number of land deals across few states, said the rural development minister, Mr. Jairam Ramesh.
The minister said that a significant rise has been observed in land deals in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and if the bill is delayed further, then it will create problem to farmers than helping them out.
The Bill seeks to replace the outdated Land Acquisition Act 1894 and heads towards providing fair compensation to landowners and resettle them in the event of losing control over their land. The centre plans to get the bill cleared in the second half of the budget session of parliament that resumes on April 22.
As per the new bill, the compensation in urban areas will be set based on the value of land transactions in the preceding three years while in rural areas, it will be estimated by doubling the value arrived at using the prescribed methodology. However, states will given the power to rise the compensation if needed.
The rural development minister revealed that he has received many optimistic feedback to the bill and most differences had by and large been ironed out.
While some parties have sent their feedbacks in written form, others have verbally communicated, said the minister. Except for a few ideological issues, all agree to the bill’s importance, he said. The Left wants that government shouldn’t acquire land which will be for use of private companies while the BJP has highlighted a string of issues such as including safeguards against excess acquisition of land.
