Lands Laws should be looked onto by the Modi govt as per the Ministry Officials
The agricultural department firstly proposes to have a review on land ceiling laws as Narendra Modi takes over.
Cabinet secretary Ajit Seth checked a presentation on a review of land ceiling laws. 10-20 acres of irrigated lands of two crops are held by each state which stops large-scale acquisition and hampers lease.
To boost irrigation the farm ministry proposed amendments to Agricultural Produce Market. Due to inadequate cooperation from state government the UPA government failed various attempts to review land ceilings laws.
The Bharatiya Janta Party said that this would give a scientific acquisition of non-cultivable land and its growth. This favors the famers with food production in mind and betters the economic goals of the country.
Gokul Patnaik, chairman of Global Agri-System said that this idea initiated by the agricultural department is beneficial. The average holdings have dropped below two hectares which makes farming uneconomical. This at times leads to reverse tenancy.
S Mahendra Dev, director of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, said that small and marginal farmers would get productivity benefits and more acres would come under mechanization. In states like Maharashtra, tenancy is not legal, and like Andhra Pradesh it is orally mentioned, which shows immense neglect.
Ajay Jalkhar, chairman of Vharat Krishak Samaj said that land issues are primarily under the State and the Centre has limited role to play in it.
