Liquior will be replaced by Masala milk & DJ will be replaced by a dandiya for New year Eve party
Driven by an urge to discourage over-indulgence, a housing society in Kandivli (W) has devised a party with a purpose. Instead of liquor, masala milk will be passed around in earthen pots, and meat and seafood will make way for traditional Kathiawadi preparations. Catering contractor Devendra Kotecha has placed an order for gallons of milk for a New Year’s Eve party. And the DJ will be replaced by a dandiya band. It’s an idea that is gaining ground.
Housing colonies across the city prefer to organize neighbourhood parties on December 31, forgoing lavish, hyped public soirees in favour of small, intimate gatherings. Pankaj Kotecha of Kandivli’s Agarwal Residency, which has organized the masala milk party said that their sole aim is to prevent the youths of the colony from falling prey to vices like drinking and rowdy parties that are common on New Year’s Eve.
The central suburbs have their own parallel in the 25-storey Mahavir Universe in Bhandup. The residents of this housing society moved in this year and are preparing the foundation for a cordial existence. Both societies have spent large sums on the party, engaging top-notch entertainers. Kandivli has opted for a dandiya band led by Tushar Sonigra, while Bhandup has requisitioned magician-ventriloquist Sunil Kamat, whose talking monkeys have travelled worldwide.
Devendra Kotecha will lay out a feast of bajra and jowar bhakri, sev tamatar, baingan ka bharta as well as Italian and Chinese dishes. The Agarwal Residency members felt that spending Rs 300 per head on a building party was a good deal. At Bhandup, the pav bhaji-and-magic show treat will cost a mere Rs 130 per head.
