Mandur residents threaten to dump garbage in front of CM’s residence
Bangalore- Residents of Mandur, sick and tired of garbage dumping around their homes, are up in arms to dump garbage in front of the residences of CM and Deputy CM.
People mostly affected by Mandur landfill are the ones living in Mandur and Birahalli gram panchayats. They have been planning to dump lorry loads of wastes in front of the Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok’s residences.
During a meeting with CM, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities, Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy and Commissioner Rajneesh Goel, it had been assured that the number of trucks carrying garbage to the landfill would be cut down regularly each month.
According to the agreement made, 225 garbage trucks in October-November had to be brought down to 150 in December and 75 in January. And from February, trucks would be stopped and the piled up garbage at Mandur landfill would be processed and cleared.
However, 500 garbage trucks of BBMP continue to dump garbage in Bangalore everyday and none of the promises made by the Palike has been fulfilled.
The Palike was sending only five tankers of potable water to the affected villages of Mandur, Gundur, Biappanahalli, Kammasandra, Marasandra, Katagollahalli, Bommenahalli, Bidarahalli and Hancharahalli. Since that was not sufficient, with the aid of panchayat fund, the residents increased the number to 10 tankers in a day.
The residents have also planned to legally challenge the state government’s decision of increasing the buffer zone/ no development zone to one km radius around the landfill. The Karnataka government had promised of converting the landfill into a park. And if that’s going to be a park area then what was the need to increase buffer zone, question residents.
