MCD asked the residents to use mosquito-proof coolers
To keep dengue and chikungunya at bay, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) asked the city residents to use special mosquito-proof coolers (MPC). The coolers is environment friendly and using the MPC will help stop larvae breeding. The civic body plans to publish advertisements to make people aware about the mosquito-proof coolers (MPC).
The special mosquito-proof coolers (MPC) were developed by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in 2007. It has a modified water tank that completely covers the water inside the cooler tank with a metallic sheet to prevent mosquitoes from entering and breeding. MPC needs a clean-up only once in two months and there is no need to sprinkle harmful chemicals in its water tank to stop mosquito breeding. MPC is environment friendly and prevent mosquitoes from entering and breeding in cooler. It will also not require water to be filled every day as is done in a conventional cooler because the stored water inside the cooler does not evaporate.
According to the MCD health department, 70 percent of mosquito breeding in the national capital has been found in coolers. This year alone, over 5,000 dengue cases and 70 chikungunya cases were reported from Delhi.
Use special mosquito-proof coolers to keep dengue and chikungunya at bay – this will be the advice of Municipal Corporation of Delhi to the citizens ahead of the larvae breeding season next year. The civic body plans to publish advertisements to make people aware about the special cooler.
