MCD’s claims of being fully prepared for the Monsoon have fallen flat

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), earlier this year had deployed 525 portable pumps and 14 high-discharged mobile diesel pumpsets in all its zones. Not only this, control rooms in all zones were made operational 24×7 to attend to waterlogging complaints. But all this could not prevent the chaos that Delhiites faced after Tuesday’s rains. Forty minutes of heavy rain brought the city to a complete standstill with kilometre long traffic jams and roads submerged in water.

Now, the civic agency claims that it is reworking its existing plan to ensure that Tuesday’s situation is not repeated. The commissioner has asked officials to review the situation and submit report so that action can be taken.

The Delhi Traffic Police claims that they had cautioned MCD about the drainage condition and had anticipated the mess . In March, the Delhi Traffic Police had released a list of 150 roads, a majority of which belonged to MCD, where traffic was most affected by heavy rains. “We have brought it to the notice of MCD that waterlogging and the unnecessary trouble faced by commuters could have been avoided on Tuesday,” said B S Bassi, Special Commissioner of Police Traffic.

In June, commissioner KS Mehra had claimed that the MCD had met its target of removing one lakh metric tonnes of silt from drains before the monsoon. This year the civic agency had deployed 525 portable pumps and 14 high-discharged mobile diesel pumpsets in all its zones.

The shoddy desilting work done by the agency as their so-called arrangements couldn’t prevent waterlogging on several city roads was exposed and the tall claims of being fully prepared for the monsoon have fallen flat after the downpour.

“Additional commissioners and the heads of various departments will coordinate with each other after which a report will be submitted to the MCD commissioner. Also, dewatering pumps will need to be strengthened” said Deep Mathur director, press and information, MCD.
