Metro proposal approved in Varanasi
Varanasi- The proposal to introduce metro rail service in the city has been approved under the new plan of Varanasi Master Plan-2031.
It was proposed by town and country planning department and was accepted by the state committee and Varanasi Development Authority board. The proposal was made seeing the need of metro rail service in Varanasi city.
In this regard, public suggestions and objections will also be invited between April 25, 2013 and May 25, 2013. The new master plan also proposed creation of six big parking sites.
The proposal suggested metro rail on four routes in the expanded city limits. There will be one underground and three elevated metro lines. Elevated metro line are proposed between Cantonment railway station and Sarnath, DLW and Mughalsarai via Cantonment and City railway station and Kutchehri and Babatpur via Shivpur. One underground metro line has been proposed between Cantonment railway station and Lanka.
Earlier, the same proposal which was made was rejected. Before 2008, the Varanasi Development Authority proposed metro rail in the presence of Delhi Metro authorities and top officials of the state government. It proposed two routes, one was between Mohansarai by-pass and Sarnath via Hurdattpur, DLW, Dashaswamedh, Machhodari Park, City Railway station, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Pandeypur, Pahadia and Ashapur.
And the second route was between Babatpur airport and birthplace of Sant Ravidas via Shivpur, Kutchehri, Cantonment railway station, Sigra, Rathyatra, Bhelupur, Sankat Mochan and Lanka crossing. However, the authorities did not pay any heed on this proposal.
A ray of hope again rose when the Prime Minister had visited the city in March 2008 and sought proposal to develop modern transport system. Following this, the senior concerned authorities issued directives to prepare a proposal on development of transport system.
Further, VDA jointly prepared plan with a Gurgaon-based company in 2009. This plan proposed an underground rail transit between Lanka and Sarnath via Cantonment Railway Station and light elevated rail transit between DLW and Mughalsarai and from Kuchehri to Babatpur. However, this plan also could not be executed.
The VDA proposed many other proposals to bring metro in Varansai, but they all got rejected on the basis of feasibility.
