Nagpur Metro Rail project gets Maharashtra govt nod

Nagpur metroNagpur- The elevated Nagpur Metro Rail project has been approved by the Maharashtra government. The estimated cost of this metro project is around Rs 7,350 crore.

The project will be implemented by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). The metro proposal will be soon forwarded to central government for approval, said Chief Minister.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) presented by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) suggested two routes: North-South and East-West with 18 and 19 stations respectively. Traffic flow was the key factor in determining the routes which was done on the basis of survey data.

In 2002, a survey conducted by L&T Ramboll proposed the route from Transport Plaza to Mihan. And in 2010, the Chief Minister announced the tentative route of first phase from Sitabuldi to Mihan which would be further extended to Butibori. This was confirmed in the recent budget session.

According to the Minister, till yet the state government has spent Rs 1000 crore for land acquisition for Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) and infrastructural development.

Additionally, the cost of two corridors of Pune metro has been revised and is increased by over Rs 2000 crore. And now the estimated cost of this project has reached to Rs 10,183 crore. Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor has got approval from the state while the Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate corridor is under consideration.

Similarly, Mumbai Metro Phase I Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar project is being constructed at the cost of Rs 2,356 crore and is expected to be completed by September 2013. The monorail project Wadala to Chembur will be operational by mid 2013 and construction work from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Wadala Phase is expected to be completed by June 2014.
