Motorists Should Avoid Honking Unnecessarily
Bangalore-once regarded as the pensioners’ paradise are growing deaf due to the noise created by increasing number of vehicles. Citizens are of course concerned about air pollution created by dust, garbage and exhaust gases from vehicles. But they do not give much thought to a greater danger — noise pollution. Noise levels checked at various points in Bangalore are well above acceptable limits. More than the loudness, it is the shrillness of horns that causes greater harm.
Pedestrians should avoid jaywalking and cross the roads only at designated points. Autorickshaw drivers should refit the silencers or install four-stroke engines. Transport officials should check noise emission in autorickshaws and other vehicles at the time of issuing fitness certificates to them. They should conduct surprise checks to catch errant drivers.
Steps to tackle noise-induced problems rest on the shoulders of pedestrians, motorists, traffic authorities, transport officials and political leaders. Motorists should avoid honking unnecessarily. There are more than three lakh vehicles plying on Bangalore’s roads alone. What is disturbing is that about 900 or more new vehicles are being registered every day in Bangalore.
