Mumbai Senior citizens are planning to organize a mass protest
Navi Mumbai’s senior citizens are planning to organize a mass protest on August 16. Dr. SP Kinjawadekar, ‘All India Senior Citizens Association‘ president and resident of Nerul regretted the ‘cold response’ of Central as well as State governments in solving problems of senior citizens. The mass protest will be held at Azad Maidan, CST, Mumbai on August 16 to highlight their grievances such as implementations of Nation’s Principles for Older Persons, implement Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
In some households Senior citizens are treated as burden and BPL Senior Citizens either do not get any old age pension or are paid much less than the stipulated minimum. A mass protest of Senior citizens will be organized to highlight their grievances.
Some of the issues which the elders want to highlight through the protest are:
- The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 must be implemented early
- Eleven years have passed and NPOP (Nation’s Principles for Older Persons) has not been implemented by a single state.
- More than 50% BPL (Below Poverty Line) Senior Citizens [65+ ] either do not get any old age pension or are paid much less than the stipulated minimum.
- No provision of social or health security though 63 years have passed since Independence.
Kinjawadekar regretted the ‘cold response’ of Central as well as State governments. However, he lauded the efforts of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in creating a cell for senior citizens, building nine day-care centres for them and providing 75 per cent concession in local bus fare.
