Mumbai to witness another Auto-strike soon
Residents in Mumbai may have to bear the burnt of another auto-strike if the Mumbai Auto-rickshaw women’s Union decides to call one if their demands are not met. The Union has already made it clear that they might go on a indefinite strike if their demands are not met. The president of the union Mr Sharad Rao has said that they might call a strike from November 9.
Amongst others the Union has demanded to include the Dr Patankar Committee formula on fare hikes. The formula was proposed by the panel in 1993, but was not approved by the state government. According to the formula the hikes in the fare is calculated by examining various aspects like consumer price index and rising insurance costs. The union has also been demanding more shuttles in the suburbs, prepaid autos at airport and outside prominent stations like Bandra Terminus and Borivli, crackdown on illegal autos in Mumbai, allowing autos to enter island city, withdrawal of hefty taxes and insurance, welfare schemes and pension for drivers.
