New Parliament building to be finalised soon
The government is to take final decision on whether a lookalike of the Parliament building to be constructed near it.
The decision will be based on the recommendations of a top parliamentary panel comprising Urban development minister Kamal Nath, parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Bansal, some prominent parliamentarians and leaders of opposition.
The move gathered momentum following a report earlier this month by an internal Lok Sabha, which concluded that massive wear and tear in the building, coupled with lack of emergency preparedness raised serious questions over its structural stability.
The report said that the Delhi Fire Service has declined a fire safety clearance to the building and raised concerns over lack of preparedness for earthquake.
Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar is to name a high-powered committee (HPC) after consulting with Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari, in which the committee will decide whether to accept either of the two sites offered by the Central Public Works Department.
