NHAI to build the longest highways until 2013
New-Delhi- As per their plan of the NH Development Programme during 2012-13, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has aimed to construct at least 2,800-2,900 km highways.
This will be the NHAIs highest ever completion in the history. As per sources, the longest ever NH construction recorded until now is 2,693 km in 2009-10.
As per an official from NHAI, they have been requested to achieve their internal target of 3,000 km by March-end and to complete the work on the construction of the minute pending stretches in order to complete the large corridors. A meeting held by the NHAI discussed issues related to the under construction stretches at the highest level midst senior NHAI and other important officials.
NHAI has constructed about 1,650 km highways until December. The officials also stated that the construction pace has to be increased in order to meet the targets. However, the authority has failed to meet the target of the awarding projects as there has been a very little response from the bidders.
A plan will be sketched by the ministry and NHAI to make sure that the concessionaires at the time of construction should not have small patches and instead have long stretches. A private concessionaire stated that if the land provided to them is free of all the clearances and is contiguous, the work can be completed sooner.
