Nine Companies under scanner of Vigilance sleuths in Bhubaneswar
Vigilance sleuths in Bhubaneshwar Orissa, have alleged that nine industrial units were found to be involved in the crime of evading taxes. Some prominent names that have come up were Jindal Stainless Limited, Vedanta Aluminium Limited, Visa Steel Rathi Steel and Power Limited and Bhusan Power and Steel Limited amongst others. The report was made by a special investigation team (SIT) of the state vigilance directorate which had submitted tax evasion case reports against nine industrial units.
Earlier the state finance department had ordered the SIT to probe into the matters of possible tax evasion by ten big industrial plants. The SIT was formed on the directions of the Orissa high court.
Minister of Finance Mr.Prafulla Chandra Ghadei had said the government would serve notices to the errant companies and if they fail to comply with the order than sufficient measures will be taken to penalise the guilty. However Finance department officials are sceptical about the consequences as most business houses nowadays knock the doors of courts to avoid shelling out taxes.
Ghadei also revealed that apart from the nine big industrial houses, SIT had found another seventy six small industrial facilities, including transport and mining companies in cases pertaining to tax evasion. The finance minister added that Orissa along with Gujarat and Maharashtra were among states to have introduced computerized tax collection system hoping that this transperancy which in turn will curb corruption.
