No additional taxes proposed for 2013-14 BMC budget
BMC has claimed that no new taxes and charges will be included in the BMC budget to be announced for 2013-14 financial year. Also, the civic body is unlikely to announce any new projects or schemes in the next fiscal year.
BMC is all set to recover Rs 29,000 crore to Rs 30,000 crore budget for 2013-14 from its current services and completing pending projects. An approximate Rs 26,581 crore was collected in 2013-13 which was 26% higher than its previous year.
The civic body has already collected Rs 1,000 crore from fungible FSI this year. This amount is likely to go up to Rs 1,500 crore by the end of March.
Also, the body is expecting a rise of 10-15% in budget in the next financial year as it is strengthening its sources of income this year. BMC has plans of speeding up ongoing projects in health, education and information technology sectors and is not going to allocate funds for new projects.
According to BMC data, despite the increasing budget, the civic body was unable to spend even one-fourth of the funds set aside for capital expenditure during the first nine months of 2012-13.
However, BMC has planned flyovers for building infrastructure in the city. Environment issues are set to get a further push with the civic body targeting more sewage treatment plants.
The municipal commissioner had earlier in his speech has hinted increase in water tax as well depending on the hike in operation, maintenance and power supply charges to fund infrastructure projects.
