Noida residents protest against power cuts, proposed hike
Due to unscheduled and lengthy power cuts and the government’s decision to increase power tariff rates have angered the residents in Noida, as they will be staging a protest outside the power department office on June 28.
NP Singh, acting president, Federation of Noida Residents’ Welfare Association (Fonrwa) said due to prolonged and frequent power cuts, residents are spending sleepless nights. A letter has been sent to the head of the power department and several RWAs has come forward to support the protest, added Singh.
Authorities should focus on generating more power for the city instead of raising power tariffs, said Neeraj Gulati, a resident of Sector 12.
Power department charges Rs. 3.85 per unit from domestic consumers presently.
The industrial area, which is supposed to be a no-power cut zone, has reported up to 18-hour power outages daily, as a result, they have incurred huge losses.
During summers, Noida experiences a power shortage of approximately 300-600 MW daily, especially in areas like Noida Phase II, sectors 2, 8, 9, 10, 50, 51 and 62 and Surajpur belt, according to an Assocham report.
