Parking in South Mumbai to get costlier

No Comments Sub Category:Awareness,Civic Issues,Mumbai,Municipality Posted On: Mar 29, 2013

Pay and parkBrihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which had kept buy and park options in some areas in South Mumbai is thinking of introducing variable parking rates in the city.

The civic body is planning on a new policy to revise parking rates and that will be area specific. As of now, the rates will be higher in areas like Nariman Point where there is a greater demand for parking.

BMC is also ensuring that the vehicle owners who park their vehicles illegally be fined appropriately. The parking attendant will be given handheld devices with inbuilt cameras which will be helpful in taking pictures of illegally parked vehicles and also note their numbers.

If it becomes difficult to recover the fine on the spot, the same information would be transferred to the regional transport office and it will be recovered, once the owner comes to renew the vehicle’s registration.

A new parking policy will be finalised soon which will minimize the illegal parking. Also, the number of parking and no-parking zones in the city would be revised and more areas will be kept as options where public parking lots can be opened.

There are around 6.5 lakh cars in the city and over 14 lakh two wheelers. But the number of public parking lots available is only 93.

BMC had recently showed a presentation on the working of the hi-tech web-based parking system in front of standing committee members. However, the members were not impressed much and asked the civic body to come up with a new parking policy sooner.

Currently, outsiders are allowed to park their vehicles in the spaces outside. The idea is to restrict the use of the slots to residents of a particular housing society or area.

The earlier initiative is still in the planning phase and will go public on 1st of May, 2013. Also, the civic body is thinking of making the whole system online. Residents can book parking slots online and they will be provided with e-receipts.

Soon, tenders will be invited for providing handheld devices and a software that will allow motorists to check the availability of parking space and make bookings online.

These scanners will be helpful in maintaining a record of the parked vehicles in the lot and will be carried by a parking attendant.
