BMC to sell parking lots for vehicles from May
With the increasing population and vehicles on road, it has become difficult to park vehicles within the stipulated area. No worries! Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has thought of an initiative to put an end to parking woes.
If everything goes fine and the proposal gets approved, some of the areas in South Mumbai will be reserved for parking vehicles. Owners will have to pay to reserve the space outside their buildings.
These parking lots will only be sold to the owners and outsiders won’t be allowed to park there.
In congested areas, where residents find it difficult to park their vehicles on roads outside their buildings in Mumbai, this will be a good initiative.
Currently, outsiders are allowed to park their vehicles in the spaces outside. The idea is to restrict the use of the slots to residents of a particular housing society or area.
This initiative is still in the planning phase and will go public on 1st of May, 2013. Also, the civic body is thinking of making the whole system online.
Residents can book parking slots online and they will be provided with e-receipts.
Soon, tenders will be invited for providing handheld devices and a software that will allow motorists to check the availability of parking space and make bookings online.
These scanners will be helpful in maintaining a record of the parked vehicles in the lot and will be carried by a parking attendant.
As per reports, the whole cost of manning parking lots along with security will be around Rs 75 lakh. Currently, there are 92 public parking lots and 47 locations have been identified as the spot tender locations.
