Patna to get metro or monorail project by 2015
Patna: The urban development and housing board department of Bihar has planned to launch Patna metro or monorail system by 2015. This would put an end to the traffic congestion issues in the city.
State urban development minister Prem Kumar has announced the news at an election meeting. He said that tenders will be invited in this regard and considering the population of Patna and project expenditure, it will be decided through a survey whether metro or monorail would suit Patna. As of now, four routes have been proposed for the project.
Ganga riverfront project in the city would have 6.5-km-long walkway between Digha and Patna City. Remodelling of twenty ghats along the walkway is also in the plan, said the minister.
Prem Kumar said that the target for the first phase is to provide drinking water, sewerage and drainage in around 55 cities of the state.
He promised pure drinking water and 24×7 water supply to all households in Patna. Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCo) is trying to provide 24×7 surface water to all households, he added. BUIDCo has appointed consultants for smooth functioning of all these projects in Patna. It is expected that proper sewerage, drainage system and drinking water facility will be made available in the next six months.
Approximately, 40,000 million litres of sewerage is being produced in India per day while only 20 percent of it is getting treated, said ICC director Kamal Sahi. The remaining 80 percent of the untreated sewerage goes into rivers, lakes and ponds, polluting them and making them unfit for use. Also this will abruptly increase the nitrate level in groundwater making it unsafe and unhealthy.
For proper sewerage management, the government has to encourage more sewerage treatment plants (STPs) at the primary level or colony level in order to reduce the pressure on the city level, said a consultant.
