Hike in Delhi Airport Metro fares
New Delhi- Within two months time, the fare structure of Delhi Airport Metro Express has been revised twice. This time the concessionaire has increased the fares by Rs 30.
The last time the concessionaire had revised fares was on January 23, when the Airport Metro Express service was relaunched after a break of six months. Around 50 percent hike in fares had been done by the authority.
Metro commuters have got annoyed with sudden hike of fares by Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd. They claimed that high increase in fares, particularly twice in such a short span of time is a commuter-unfriendly move.
At present, a ride to Terminal 3 of the Delhi Airport from the New Delhi Metro station will cost Rs 150 per person, while that to Dwarka Sector 21 will come to Rs 180.
The rate of Metro monthly pass has also been increased by Rs 300 to Rs 2,500 to travel between New Delhi and Dwarka. Each pass allows 45 trips in a month.
It has to be noted that the concessionaire did not bother to issue any public notice before revising the fares. Such a decision related to a means of public transport is not supposed to be taken in this way, alleged commuters.
While commuters complained about the sudden move of the concessionaire, the Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd said that it had entered into an agreement with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) before making this move. A spokesperson said that the fare set at present is as per the original concession agreement of 2008.
After the relaunch of train service in this route, instead of focusing towards improving the service by increasing frequency and enhancing speed, the authority is looking to make more profit. Nowadays, around 12,000 commuters travel daily on the high-speed line, fewer than the number of people who used to travel on the line before it was closed for repairs last year.
