PCMC Pune Corporators discussion over Potholes

No Comments Sub Category:Uncategorized Posted On: Jul 22, 2011

The issue of badly potholed roads within the civic limits of Pune is worsening day by day with corporators from all parties criticising the administration for the sorry state of affairs. Some of the roads and the potholes on them have developed due to lack of storm water drains.

Contractors are doing inferior quality work which is leading to potholes appearing on the roads. The engineering department should take measures to increase the defect liability period of contractors, which is one year at present.

On Thursday at the general body meeting of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation many witnessed heated discussions for one and half hours on the issue of badly potholed roads. Pimpri Chinchwad mayor Yogesh Behl said, “Contractors submitting bids that are 30% to 35% below prevailing rates are being allotted contracts. However they do not do their work properly. He told city engineer N S Umate to blacklist such contractors.

“The defect liability period of contractors can be increased as per the state public works department guidelines, but this will also increase the cost of the projects,” he added.

Earlier, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator and former mayor RS Kumar initiated the discussion and drew the attention of the house to the potholes appearing on various roads within the municipal limits after the recent rains. He said that junior engineers and other officials did not inspect when the contractor asphalted the roads. NCP corporator Mahesh Landge questioned whether the citizens would have to wait till November and December for potholes to be filled properly with asphalt.

Independent corporator Maruti Bhapkar demanded that a retired judge be appointed to monitor the quality of roads within municipal limits. NCP corporator Vinayak Ransubhe questioned whether the civic administration would wake up after people lose their lives due to the potholes. Congress corporator Yashwant Bhosale demanded that the PCMC issue show-cause notice to the executive engineers concerned for the potholes that have appeared in their areas of jurisdiction.
