Penalty to be increased for offences in Metro
New Delhi- With the recent appalling incident of the Delhi Gangrape, the CISF has imposed a hike of about 2500 percent as penalties for offences against women and criminal activities in Delhi metro.
The current penalty for such crimes is Rs. 150-200 but the CISF wants it to be increased to Rs. 5,000.
Owing to this, the CISF has written to the Union Home Ministry requesting for an enormous increase of the penalty amount for any sort of criminal activities recognized under the Delhi Metro Railway (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002.
Tightening the security measure in the city, the central police force have been allotted to keep vigil in the Delhi Metro. They will mainly be operational in places where men travel in women’s railway coaches. This step was taken as a wake towards the Delhi gang rape incident last month.
According to an official, there is an urgent need to revise the penalty rates as the current rates for the crimes against women are too less.
The Senior officials from the Delhi Metro stated that the demand of the central police force to the Urban Development Ministry, a nodal authority for the operations and administration of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will be communicated by the Home Ministry.
There has also been a request by the CISF to revise at least four-five other offences which it is mandated to deal with directly in Delhi Metro.
