Phase III metro station to have no parking space

No Comments Sub Category:Delhi-NCR,Metro,Realty News Posted On: Feb 27, 2013

trainNew-Delhi- The Phase III metro stations which are being constructed along Ring Road and Outer Ring Road will have no parking area as space is premium in these localities. They will instead have designated pick-up and drop-off points at every station.

According to a Delhi metro official, line 7 has  many stations on the Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar corridor, which is located on Ring Road. They are planning the station box with utilities since parking area requires space.  The stations are planned to have pick-up and drop-off points which will include Punjabi Bagh, Rajouri Garden, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi Cantt, Dhaula Kuan and Moti Bagh.

However, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation officials stated that stations like South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Ashram and Bhikaji Cama Place will not have any parking facilities either. If there is any possibility for creating some space, the DDA will construct parking area  in future.

Similarly, this is followed for the stations on line 8 (Janakpuri-Botanical Garden) with most of the stations being located on Outer Rind Road and parking lot has not constructed in stations like Pragati Maidan or the current Rajouri Garden.

The non construction of parking space is not just due to the lack of space but is a decision for a separate parking facility being a part of the transit-oriented design (TOD) suggested by UTTIPEC. Phase III will be the first one to  adopt the TOD principles.

All the metro stations have been seen as multi-modal hubs having an influence zone. A senior official stated that they have decided to not have dedicated parking space for the private vehicles near the influence zone but will instead have a transit hub along with parking for para-transit vehicles like rickshaws and autos. The metro station has an influence zone of about 300m followed by an integrated mobility proposal in the 2km zone. Perhaps if provided, the parking facility will be located outside the influence zone.
