Plans to expedite land acquisition
The Karnataka State Cabinet recently took a decision to amend relevant Sections of Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964, and Karnataka Land Reforms Act, 1961, for the purpose.
As per the sources the government suggested to take up the process of granting permission to purchase agricultural land by industrialists and simultaneously clearing land conversion applications to lessen the time taken. Presently industries can procure land by two criteria, one by means of land acquisition and second through purchase of land by obtaining permission under Section 109 of the Karnataka Land Reforms Act.
Under the second option, the taluk and State levels committees scrutinise the proposals sent by the industries. The industries have to apply for conversion of land use under Section 95 of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, as soon as land is granted .As per the complaints received by the companies over the years it is a time-consuming process and that it should be cut down.
In January, a Cabinet committee suggested that land grant and conversion be taken up all together. It also recommended that the process of scrutiny at the taluk and state levels be completely done away with. By the adoption of this process industries can get their land within two months after they submit their applications, as per sources.
The land for industrial purposes should be utilised within the stipulated period, or else the land will be transferred to the land bank of the government.
