Plots in Mumbai meant for affordable housing being misused
Plots in Mumbai which have been kept aside for affordable housing is being misused. More than 40% of the land has been either lying vacant or are encroached upon now.
Five out of eight plots reserved for welfare centres are misused. Around 60% of plots are only used out of total.
Malad-Malwani stretch in the P (North) ward in Mumbai has been witnessing the same picture as reported by a voluntary organization YUVA. This attempt was made by studying the Mumbai’s development plan (DP).
This came to light at a time when the draft DP will be made public in 2014. The architects have claimed that an amendment of the plan should be carried out which should recognize the natural assets and landscape of the city, and formulate guidelines for their protection.
The author of Mumbai Development Plan has recommended reducing the tenure of DP from current 20 years to five years. Also, he claimed that a framework should be maintained to monitor and amend the plan at regular intervals.
Currently, there are many violations in the DP which have come into light. Some are- DP reserves around 37 acres of area for people who are affected in the Malad-Malwani stretch. They commonly call it as “housing for dishoused”. But only 0.43 acres have been developed.
Also, the violations have been seen in healthcare sector as well. Around 48 health posts had to be maintained considering the population of P (North) ward (9,58,000). However, only four are maintained by the BMC and three let out under development control rules.
Open spaces which have been reserved on paper are also not given. One in three plots reserved for recreation grounds in the Malad-Malwani belt have been encroached and now some private clubs or malls are being erected on the same land.
