PMC demands separate civic body for eastern parts
In a recent general body meeting, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has demanded a separate civic body for the eastern parts of the city.
The demand was raised by an NCP corporator amidst the ongoing discussions by the elected members on the civic budget.
This demand for separate civic body is due to the upcoming residential projects, industrial projects and information technology companies in the eastern parts of Pune and the pressure is increasing for the civic body.
Since, the population and infrastructure needs of these areas are increasing, it will put more pressure on the civic administration. So, there is a need to set up a separate municipal corporation.
Earlier in February, Deputy chief minister had commented that a separate civic body is needed considering the growing developments. The jurisdiction of this municipal corporation will start from Hadapsar and extend beyond.
PMC has recently announced the budget for financial year 2013-14. The chairman of the standing committee of the civic body presented a budget of Rs 4167.50 crore for this fiscal year.
Earlier, municipal commissioner had presented a budget of Rs 3605.02 crore which was increased by Rs 534.48 crore to the present value. Compared to the current budget, last year it was approved at around Rs 3633 crore.7
This budget has kept Rs 30 crore for basic civic infrastructure for the recently merged 28 villages and Rs 20 crore for development of Kothrud and surrounding areas. However, nothing has been made clear as what the developments would be.
