Illegal ConstructionsPune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been on a demolition spree recently and has removed all illegal constructions which measure more than 25,000 sq ft in Ghorpadi area.

One of such buildings had 36 flats and out of total, about 18 were occupied. Apart from this property, a six-storey reinforced cement concrete (RCC) building was also demolished.

This six storied building in Pune had a parking lot on the ground floor and five storeys above it which was illegal.

PMC had been taking action for two consecutive days against multi-storey apartments in Pune. Many notices had been sent to the owners stating that their properties were unauthorised.

In the notice, the owners were asked to demolish the building, but they did not take any further steps. Therefore, the civic officials and the police razed the structure despite opposition from residents.

Many police officials and workers had participated in the drive. The houses that were destroyed were in Shivajinagar, Kasba Peth, Wadgaonsheri, Ambegaon, Kothrud, Katraj, NIBM Road and Pashan. Both commercial and residential spaces were under scanner.

This is not the first drive. Earlier, the civic body had demolished illegal constructions spread across 2095 sqft area in Kondhwa Khurd.

This initiative was taken after a three storey illegal building collapsed in the last week of September last year killing 11 people. The building was built in low water zone area where only 0.33 floor space index (FSI) is permitted but the building was built beyond limit.

The civic body has announced to keep a check on these type of illegal constructions and encroachments from now onwards. The building department of PMC had already warned the citizens and buyers not to buy such flats in Pune which do not have proper layout and building approvals.
