Power Tariff Hike by GERC Gujarat by 5 Percent
Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd and Torrent Power, two of state owned distribution firms had filed petitions for power tariff hike which caters to Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat cities. The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has accepted the petition and consumers might have to shell out an additional 2 per cent to 5 per cent for their electricity bills. Below Poverty Line (BPL) consumers and metered agricultural users have been exempted from the tariff hike. The new tariff regime has come into force from September 1.
For consumers in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, GERC has allowed a hike of 20 paise per unit for residential consumption up to 250 units and there after the increase was just 5 paise per unit. Consumers in Surat have to pay for an average hike of 12 paise per unit.The state-owned distribution companies, which cover the entire state, were allowed to hike power rates by 13 paise per unit – 4.05% of the existing tariff – as against the proposal to hike 25 paise per unit.
Households buying power from state companies will have to pay an additional 15 paise per unit up to 250 units and five paise per unit thereafter – for a monthly consumption of 450 units per month, the bill will increase by Rs 77.50 per month.
