Proper plumbing an end to water woes
Back syphonage is the biggest risk that contaminates drinking water. 80% of diseases affecting the world are related to water. The solution, according to the World Plumbing Council and the Indian Plumbing Association, is proper plumbing.
About 8,500 children die every day because of water-borne diseases, and 80% of diseases affecting the world are related to water. The solution, according to the World Plumbing Council and the Indian Plumbing Association, is in proper plumbing.
According to Sudhakaran Nair, president of the Indian Plumbing Association and the first Indian executive board member of the World Plumbing Council, back syphonage, pilferage, and wastage are the three main factors that lead to both water wastage and risks of contamination. At a press conference called to celebrate March 11 as World Plumbing Day, Sudhakaran Nair said, “Back syphonage is the biggest risk that contaminates drinking water. This happens when a sewage pipe and a drinking water pipe runs together.”
“When there is irregular supply of water, there is a vacuum created in the drinking water pipe, which sucks water from the sewage pipe. This in turn goes to homes.” Considering that most pipes in the city are such, the risks in water being contaminated are quite high, he said. Pilferage and wastage of water because of illegal connections and leakage from ancient pipes is another major concern, pointed out Nair.
He added that pipes and plumbing in the city are old and need to be replaced, and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has a challenging task ahead, “There is no use repairing the drainage and water supply pipes in the city, they need to be replaced. Nevertheless, it is a huge task for the board to start work because it will disrupt the whole system that provides drinking water and also ruin newly laid roads,” he said. He suggested that it would be best if the work was taken up when the roads are already being dug up for Metro work and so on.”
