taxRajkot- The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) tax department has launched a massive drive to collect the pending property tax in city. An amount of Rs. 126 crore has already been collected by the civic body against its target of Rs. 155 crore  for the year.

According to an official, they have started sealing the defaulter’s properties from the past few days which resulted in good collection. In fact, this was the first time they had launched the sealing drive simultaneously in all the three zones. In the past three days, the RMC has collected a sum of Rs. 65 lakh as property tax.

The official further stated that as soon as the owners pay the compete property tax amount, their sealed properties will be unlocked. They hope to meet their planned target of property tax collection.

Earlier in 2012, the RMC had decided to auction 14 properties belonging to the defaulters after intensifying its property tax collection drive. The property auction was held  between July 16 to July 21 2012, with an expected collection of about Rs  20 – 30 lakh. Last year the RMC had collected a sum of Rs. 28 crore through one of its drive.

However, in order to encourage the people to pay their taxes, the RMC has decided to extend a rebate scheme of 5 percent for few days.  The RMC had given a rebate of Rs. 5.5 crore to the tax payers in the city. RMC  has been keeping its branches open even on weekends to facilitate the tax collection.

A warning by the officials was given that strict action will be taken against 350 properties of tax defaulters, these properties will be auctioned in case the owners fail to pay their taxes. A target of Rs. 150 crore  was set as property tax collection last year. Alerting the tax defaulters, the RMC  has sent SMS alerts reminding them about their pending property tax dues for which it received a good response.

The RMC said that there are about 33.32 lakh properties in Rajkot city, out of which only 1.5 lakh properties were registered online.  By sending the property tax alert SMS they increased their property tax collection last year. A sum of Rs. 53 crore was collected after sending the property tax alert SMS.
