Over inefficiency of local bodies in Kochi in carrying out periodic maintenance of roads, the state government has asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to repair roads on a war footing. If all goes well, PWD expects to complete patch work and chipping work before November 30. Addressing reporters here on Sunday, PWD Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju said city roads would be repaired on a war footing. “This would be a one-time work. Roads which lead to major roads will also be taken up for repairing.” PWD secretary Manoj Joshi said that roads, after pothole filling and chipping work, would last for five to six months. Once the roads are strengthened with BM&BC process, they will get an additional lifespan of five years, he said. The government has allocated an amount of Rs 157 crore for the purpose.

This is in addition to the Rs 470 crore allocated in the budget for repairing roads. The funds are for repairing roads which fall under Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode corporations. Thiruvananthapuram gets an amount of Rs 42.48 crore while Kollam gets Rs 9.44 crore; Kochi will get Rs 31.94 crore, Thrissur Rs 35.10 crore and Kozhikode Rs 40.00 crore.
The state government has allocated an amount of Rs 20 crore to repair national highways. Ebrahim Kunju said the Centre had extended its support to develop Thrivananthapuram bypass on NH 47 and Kozhikode bypass on NH 17 to four-lane track on build-operate and transfer (BOT) basis. The minister said the state government had demanded that the Centre should refund the money spent on repairing National Highways.
