PWD was entrusted to Work on Old North Bridge Kochi
The Public works department (PWD) was entrusted with the work of the north bridge in Kochi and was expected to be completed in a year. Now, 21 years later, the side bridges are being demolished to make way for the Kochi Metro. And it has given much heart ache to those who have been on the forefront of designing this dream for Kochi.

The old North Bridge sported a new look with the construction of side bridges to ease traffic congestion in the year 1989. Since from the time former Ernakulum District Collector M P Joseph, was given the extra charge as mayor in 1984 after the council was dissolved, the project underwent changes. It was decided to construct bays for smaller vehicles and the proposal was approved.
The former mayor K.J Sohan reported saying, “It was the corporation’s idea and PWD was asked to execute it. The side bays proved to be very effective in solving the traffic problems to an extent. And 21 years is too short a lifespan for a bridge. It should not have been demolished”.
