Rajarhat New Town residents to get relief over civic problems
Kolkata- The worries of residents of Rajarhat Town regarding civic amenities have been resolved. The state cabinet has taken a significant decision by approving the proposal to enact the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2013.
The amended bill will allow New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) to function as a municipality for New Town. It will enable the civic body to collect property tax from residents along with providing civic amenities to them.
The bill will be presented to next assembly session. In this regard, the urban development department will prepare the draft for the proposed bill. Earlier, the department proposed to allow NKDA to assess, impose and collect property tax from residents of Rajarhat New Town. The proposal was rejected and the department was asked to propose few amendments in the NKDA Act such that it acts as a municipality.
The area has been facing overall lack of civic amenities which includes water problem, garbage, sewage and drainage problems. Thus, the residents were not satisfied with the services of authority.
In 2009, the approval of New Town Kolkata Development Authority Act, 2007 resulted in formation of NKDA. The authority aims to provide civic services and planned development to Rajarhat-New Town residents.
NKDA is presently the local civic authority for Rajarhat Township. The township will not fall under any municipality or corporation.
The state cabinet also cleared a proposal to take over 5.76 acres of land at Chakpachuria mouza in Rajarhat New Town. This land will be used for development of civic amenities like roads, water supply, sewage and drainage. This move is expected to boost the township.
