Red Bus organises awarness programme on waste management
As Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike(BBMP) sets a deadline of October 1 for waste segregation for the residents, Red Bus, the largest bus ticketing company of India, organised an awareness programme on their office premises in Domlur on 28th September.
The programme was organised by the employees of Red Bus and included an in depth presentation on waste management. Mr. Anselm Rosario, managing trustee of Waste Wise Trust was the chief guest of the event.
Mr. Kamal Upadhyay from Red Bus and Mr. Rosario explained the need and the ways to segregate waste at source, be it households or offices. Mr. Rosario stated that as villagers of near by areas of Bangalore have refused to accept the 4,000 tonnes waste generated daily by the city being dumped in adjacent landfills, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike(BBMP) have been forced to ask residents to segregate waste at source.
As mixed waste creates health hazards and make it impossible for waste to be recycled, segregation is a must. Only through segregation the waste can be recycled to create valuable material out of it. Mr. Upadhyay explained the steps to segregate dry, wet, garden, medical and e-waste into different boxes so that they can be easily be recycled.
The government seems to try to reach out to public through a facebook community – “Waste segregation and Recycling” by visiting which residents can get to know all the relevant information about waste segregation. The role of NGOs are also becoming crucial now. Mr. Rosario from Waste Wise Trust, which manages a dry waste collection centre and is a part of Solid Waste Management Round Table(SWMRT), an NGO specializing in composting and segregating, welcomed the move by Red Bus.
At the end of the event, the speakers urged everybody to voluntarily take up segregation at their households. Red Bus has also decided to take up the initiative to segregate waste at their office.
