Residents blocked the Tirupur-Palladam highway
A large group of residents of Tirupur from Corporation Ward 52 blocked the Tirupur-Palladam highway on Wednesday alleging erratic distribution of free colour television sets. According to the agitators, about 800 ration card holders from the ward were left out during the distribution of free colour television sets under the government scheme in their locality.
They alleged that the authorities concerned, however, had listed them under the list of beneficiaries who had received the television sets in the ward. The crowd moved away after an assurance from officials that their complaints would be looked into .
Earlier Right to Information (RTI) activist Shankar K (27) and three others had protest the alleged irregularities in the distribution of free TV sets. They claimed that only 8,000 TV sets were distributed as against 28,000 promised. Congress MLA from Kadayanallur S Peter Alphonse was distributing the sets. They were arrested on monday in Tirunelveli on charges of violating norms at a function organised to distribute free colour television sets, were released on conditional bail on Wednesday evening.
