Residents met Noida Authorities to discuss Sanitation in the City
Residents Welfare Association representatives met Noida Authority CEO Balwindar Kumar to discuss the problems plaguing the city. The primary topics of discussion were cleaning of drains, stopping the spread of dengue, quality of water and water pressure, water harvesting and maintenance of parks in the city.
Noida Authority officials explained that the meeting took place so that residents and officials could sit together and come up with solutions to their problems. The meeting was dominated by discussions on problems common to all sectors such as blocked drains, encroachment and the spread of dengue.
The RWAs and the authorities, however, could manage to come to consensus regarding the issue of drains. “The main problem of drains was the fact that the sloping in many of them is incorrect and the Authority is taking urgent steps to rectify that. We will form a consolidated picture of drains and their maintenance in the city and immediately correct all the issues. We will also ensure that there is greater involvement of the RWAs while these measures are taking place so that the work we do is more sustainable,” said Kumar.
Authority officials also said that there will be more water harvesting systems by the 2013 and also explained that the lack of water pressure in the city was due to the extensive illegal boring taking place in Noida.
However, the meeting wasn’t as successful as planned as chaos reigned the discussion. The discussion became chaotic after each RWA representative started discussing every minute problem in their respective sectors. In response, the Noida Authority officials concluded that a second round of meetings with smaller groups of RWAs would be held. “We will have separate meetings with 4-5 sectors in the future as there is more scope for discussion in a smaller group. When there is a meeting with regard to policy matters, we will discuss only one issue to keep focused,” said Kumar.

None of the 35 Indian cities with a population of more than one million distribute water for more than a few hours per day, despite generally sufficient infrastructure. Owing to inadequate pressure people struggle to collect water even when it is available. According to the World Bank, none have performance indicators that compare with average international standards.Let us hope that the residents in Noida may succeed in the sanitation program.
