Residents of Chennai set to Contest Independently in Civic Polls

In Chennai, T Nagar residents are set to nominate an independent resident candidate to contest the coming civic polls. T Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association members say the process of selecting eligible candidates will begin at the next meeting. The association feels an independent from the locality will ensure the views of residents are taken into account, especially before roads are laid or water and drainage connections are provided. “Most of the commercial buildings in this area do not follow fire safety norms nor do they have proper building or business permits,” said treasurer R Mohan. “Even though many of the commercial buildings are illegal, residents have no say on what comes up next to their homes,” he added.

Coupled with the problem of unregulated parking, said Mohan, there is no place for even garbage-collection trucks to approach their homes. “There is no way an ambulance can reach on time in an emergency,” he said. Air pollution, contamination of groundwater and lack of a proper drainage system for rainwater are among the other issues the residents want to address. Most members are long-time residents whose association with the locality goes back three or four generations. Others said the huge crowds thronging the area had become such a nuisance for residents that it was it impossible to even step out of home.
