Residents of Rajajinagar Happy to see Trees in their area cut

Three gulmohar trees and one parkia tree faced the axe in the past four days. Many trees will face the same fate in the next few days. While Residents of Malleswaram oppose tree-felling on Sankey Tank Bund Road, residents of Rajajinagar are happy to see trees in their area cut. All because their roots are blocking drain construction.

In old wards like Rajajinagar and Basaveshwarnagar, a common problem is trees near drains. “It’s inevitable that trees which have spread their roots towards the drain have to be cut. They also pose a threat to houses next to them,” said ward corporator Gangabairaiah. “On one road, a manhole was just beneath the tree. For decades, that manhole was never cleaned as it was almost impossible to do it. On other cross-roads, trees have stretched their roots blocking the drains. I wish environmentalists understand this situation,” he added.

“The roots affect the drains and branches come in the way of electric wires. There’s a need to chop many such trees. Saplings can be planted on the other side of the road where there are no electricity wires. They should be planted at some distance from the drain,” Gangabhairaiah said.

“Yes, we lost a good tree in front of our house. If it’s not cut, it will cause clogging of drains. The roots seem to have penetrated the water sump too. The house will be in danger if it falls. So, we requested the tree be cut,” said M Sharadamma, resident of 12th D Cross.

However, V Raman, another resident of Rajajinagar, asked: “Why cut them for the sake of drain construction? There must be an alternative which BBMP has not explored.”
