Residents of Santa Cruz want Four Pumping Stations instead of One

A proposed pumping station project is likely to be set up and it is going to benefit Gazdar Bandh area at Santa Cruz (West) the most, but its residents maintained that one pumping station will not serve the purpose because of the heavy rains. The location of the pumping station and the floodgates will be the critical factors,” said Gautam Rao, chairman, Gazdar Scheme Residents’ Trust (GSRT).The IIT report states that there should be four pumping stations at four floodgates at the outfall of four nullahs.”

Ground floor residents of the low-lying Gazdar Bandh area, which has routinely experienced floods during heavy rains since a decade, had spent huge amounts on replacing their wooden furniture with granite and marble. The residents are looking forward to at least some relief, though . Trupti Patel , a member of GSRT , said , “We hope that this pumping station will help ease flooding in our area .”

The proposed treatment of garbage at the pumping station , though , has found favour among residents in the Bandra-Santa Cruz stretch. “It’s a welcome project, especially for low-lying areas , which are flood-prone ,” said Hansel D’S ouza , president , Juhu Citizens ‘ Welfare Group. “The main objective of the pumping station is to stop flooding in Khar, Juhu and Santa Cruz . But the spinoff or the subsidiary benefit would be trapping of solid waste before nullah water enters the sea.”

In June 2000, GSRT had moved the Bombay High Court , after flood gates of all the five nullahs in the vicinity – PNT nullah , SNDT nullah , North Avenue , Main Avenue nullah and South Avenue nullah – were demolished . The writ petition is in the final stage of hearing.
