Residents paid Garbage Cess but Garbage not collected for a month
Residents of Coffee Board Layout paid BBMP Garbage Cess but BBMP Bangalore not collected garbage for a month.
Residents of Coffee Board Layout used to pay Rs 30 per house to contractor for collecting garbage from the area. Since BBMP started collecting Garbage Cess for this year, residents of Coffee Board Layout stopped paying the local contractor for collecting garbage thinking it would be the responsibility of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Garbage was collected by a company called Stree Shakti. “Since we were told by the BBMP to pay a garbage cess, all residents thought that the civic body would collect the garbage. Since we stopped payments to Stree Shakti since last month, they have stopped garbage collection. At the same time, BBMP is not clearing the garbage from our area. When we questioned the BBMP, we were told it would take another three months for the process to be put in place,” said M P Srikanth, president of the Coffee Board Layout Residents’ Welfare Association.
The BBMP Bangalore is yet to issue tenders for the new garbage collection regime. As a result, all the lanes of the layout, which has almost 400 houses, are strewn with garbage. Residents have either discarded it in empty plots or hung it up on trees.
BBMP joint commissioner Ravindra said, “Things will become smooth after the tender process is over. We have made an alternative plan for the layout. Our superintendent engineer is looking into the matter.”
Superintendent engineer Prasad said, “We have sent a proposal to the commissioner to collect garbage using an auto tipper. The matter will be resolved within a couple of days.”
